Mary Liana Howard

Mary Liana Howard, 74, died on January 23, 2024 at Mat Su Regional Hospital.

Many around the state knew her simply as “Momma Mary” or “Nana.” Her heart had enough room for anyone that needed or wanted love and she gave it generously. Everyone that met her were drawn to her kind and warm spirit. Her passing leaves an emptiness that can never be filled.

Mary was born in Denver, Colorado on June 8, 1949 and was the eldest child of Eldon and Barbara Howard.

Her life’s adventures left her touching hearts around the world.

Mary loved working for her community. She was the lead coordinator for Meals on Wheels in Lakewood, Colorado for several years. She supported many charities including; St. Jude, Hope for Heroes, AMVETS and several children’s charities.

She had a guilty pleasure for professional wrestling and loved the independent wrestlers here in Alaska.

Mary is survived by her only child, Barbara Montagne (Scott); four beautiful granddaughters, Izabella, Meghan, Aurora and Jocelyn and so very many that she unofficially adopted.

Mary loved a good party! There will be a celebration in her honor at AMVETS Post 9 at a later date.

She will be cremated and laid to rest in Colorado this spring.
