MAT-SU — In the wake of damage from the 2015 Sockeye fire, the Mat-Su Valley home building industry offers a few tips for hiring a professional contractor.
First, protect your family and your investment by using only licensed, bonded and insured builders or remodelers.
Below is a list of things to remember when hiring a contractor:
• Search for proof of a business license on the state of Alaska website
• Make sure the builder/remodeler has sufficient workers compensation and general liability insurance. If not, you may be liable for any construction-related accidents on your premises.
• Make sure the builder/remodeler provides you with a complete and clearly written contract. The contract should outline the scope of the work, the price, and at what points of completion payment is due.
• Find out how long they have been in the building business. It usually takes three to five years to establish a financially sound business. You want to make sure they will be around after the construction is complete to service any warranties.
Mat-Su Home Builders Association maintains a list of qualified builders and subcontractors online at matsuhomebuilders.com. Hard copies also are available at the MSHBA office.
