Follow the Yellow Brick Road to the Valley Performing Arts as it reveals a dreamlike world of talking scarecrows, woodsmen made of tin and lions that cower. That’s right, the old familiar world of Oz has touched down on stage in Wasilla.
A large, talented cast of actors and actresses has come together to create the fantasy world most of us remember from the movie, “The Wizard of Oz.” And what a success it is! With so many actors, props and effects, the team sure had its work cut out for it, and produced a wonderful play with great backgrounds and a superb cast.
Larry Bottjen, the director, deserves honorable mention as he not only directed and produced a remarkable play, but also stepped in temporarily for Rob Tracy, who plays the Scarecrow.
The group of kids, most of whom played more than one character, were “wonderful,” as quoted from my notes. Though they all showed much talent, I was simply blown away by Samuel Allred, who played the Mayor of Munchkinland.
The Cowardly Lion, played by Dave Nufer, has always been my personal favorite character. Nufer is the principal at Finger Lake Elementary School and a familiar face to the VPA crew. He recently performed in “A Christmas Carol” as Marley, The Spirit of Christmas Present, Man No. 5 and Fezziwig. His performance of The Cowardly Lion and Zeke in “Oz” was brilliant.
Garry Forrester also gave an unforgettable presentation as Hickory and The Tin Man.
Katy Schmidt’s Dorothy portrayed a distinctive role with a beautiful voice and performance. Jake Hanson, who played the beloved Toto, also shone as an audience favorite.
The VPA included in its cast a delightful orchestra, which played the familiar tunes from the movie and added to the atmosphere of the mysterious Oz.
Overall, the play was executed with plenty of talent. I left the theater with an urge to read the book by L. Frank Baum.
