Meet famous women of history during Palmer Art Walk

The Palmer Art Walk from 2 to 6 p.m., March 14 celebrates women's history this month with the ladies of the National Organization for Women.

Mat-Su NOW members will be scattered throughout the Art Walk depicting famous women who have made an impact on our society and culture throughout history. Along the walk you will be able to meet:

Here are this month’s Palmer Art Walk stops:

1 Healing Path Therapeutic Massage

550 S. Alaska St.

This location will host members of Big Brothers, Big Sisters of Alaska. BBBS will be selling baked goods and handmade crafts to support their upcoming Bowl for Kids' Sake fundraiser. They will also have information on how people can further support their program or enroll as a volunteer.

All massages will be discounted to $1 per minute, you choose how long you wish to enjoy your soothing break. Studies show massage can be energizing and help you improve your energy to get through your active day. Walk in for the next available spot or call ahead to reserve your time — 715-8748. You can also enter a drawing for two free 20-minute massages.

The Shane Lamb Gallery will be hosting Alaskan artist Sandra Cook of SL Cook Pottery & Fiber Works. Sandra will sell hand-built earthenware pottery. Each employs her own distinctive designs. She will have plates, bowls, and serving pieces for sale. Sandra's characteristic glaze is Majolica (a shiny white glaze), on which she paints bright and colorful native plant life and other decorative patterns. Her dishes are durable and can be put in the oven, microwave, and dishwasher. Sandra will also have hand-spun and hand-dyed wool and wool-blend yarn and fiber art pieces for sale. You can check out Sandra's artwork from 2 p.m. to 6pm at the Shane Lamb Gallery located in the Downtown Palmer Plaza. The gallery will host an in-house drawing from 2 p.m. to 5 p.m.

5Palmer Museum

723 S. Valley Way

The museum will host a special exhibit reception for the artists of its newest exhibit, Beyond the Classroom, a collection of artwork created by high school students from eight different high schools in the Valley. Visitors are encouraged to view the exhibit and vote for their favorite artist for Best in Show. The exhibit is a community effort being supported by Blaines Art Supply, Mat-Su College Art Department, Palmer Arts Council, Valley Arts Alliance and the Valley Fine Arts Association. Light refreshments and appetizers will be served courtesy of Turkey Red. The museum will also host a free drawing for a signed Jon Van Zyle print and some other items.

Arkose Brewery

650 E. Steel Loop

The brewery’s popular Beer Meets Canvas event is from 2 p.m. to 4 p.m. For $30 you get one pint and all the art supplies you will need. This event is open only to those 21 years or older and pre-registration is recommended. For more information or to register, please contact Arkose Brewery at 746-2337.

2 B Bella

642 S. Alaska St.

This local salon not only produces artistic creations of hair but showcases other forms of art as well. For March, B Bella will be showcasing the artwork of artist Barbara Hunt, a member of the Valley Fine Arts Association.

4 Cover Ups

840 S. Colony Way

This local upcycle furniture and apparel store will be hosting artist Mary Ann Northey, who is an Alaskan watercolor painter. Northey is a longtime Palmer resident and enjoys nature scenery for her painting. While you're there visiting with Mary, be sure to ask about Cover Ups' upcoming spring events and workshops.

3 Fireside Books

720 S. Alaska St.

This local bookstore will be hosting The Old Iditarod Gang, including Jon and Jona Van Zyle, Gail Phillips and others, to sign copies of "Iditarod: The First Ten Years." This compilation of articles and artwork includes many of the classic stories as recorded by the likes of Brit Lively, Frank Gerjevic and many others. Meet the authors starting at 3 p.m. and while you're there, learn more about the other programs Fireside Books has planned for this year.

Magpie Clothing Exchange

1901 N. Hemmer Road, Ste, 108

This new addition to the art walk is just around the corner from Palmer High School off of Hemmer Road. It is an eco-friendly resale clothing store for women providing quality used clothing and accessories and thoughtfully chosen new clothing and accessories that are fair trade, organic, or recycled. This month Magpie Clothing Exchange is proud to welcome the art students from Palmer High School. On display at Magpie Clothing Exchange are photographs created by Palmer High's “Photo As Art” class. The course introduces students to all aspects of photography: its history, a survey of prominent practitioners, methods of critique, elements of design, and technical skills involved in producing, preserving and presenting works of art.
