PALMER — Friends of the Palmer Public Library will host the Mat-Su Orchestra’s free Spring Classics concert at 3 p.m., May 5, in the Palmer Train Depot. The concert is free, but donations will be accepted to support Friends of the Palmer Public Library.
The orchestra will perform works by Haydn, Smetana, Mendelssohn, Tchaikovsky, Rimsky-Korsakov, Gliere and Dvorak.
The performance also will feature the premiere of guest composer/conductor and Palmer High School student Sterling Maffe’s new work, “Sinfoniette for Essence.”
“Sinfonietta for Essence” was written in February and March and is dedicated to Maffe’s niece, Essence Natania Maffe.
The piece consists of three movements. The first of these is a symphonic poem for the miraculous and a confession of her inevitable mischief. The second movement is a vivid musical description of her brilliance and free spirit. The final movement sings of her beauty and love.
