WASILLA — The original plan was for Greg Gusse’s solo show to hang at the Dorothy G. Page Museum in Wasilla last May.

But his fight for life got in the way.

When Gusse took to the road this time last year his health was so tenuous he thought he might never see him safely return from the trek to his Maud Road home.

Now with a clean bill of health from his doctors, Gusse is on something of a comeback tour.

Two shows of photography by Gusse will hang this month.

A solo exhibit opens with a reception from 5 to 7 p.m., May 22 at the Dorothy G. Page Museum in Wasilla. And another 20 images are hanging at the Red Beet Café this month.

Gusse said the “From Hyder to Dead Horse and Boundary to Wales” show at the Dorothy Page features 22 of his favorite images from his 15 years capturing images of Alaska and its people. The show hangs through July 2.

“I am so honored that they are putting these up for me,” Gusse said.

The prints on display were produced using the dye-sublimation process, which uses a heat press to join prints with metal plates.

All of the images he picked for the show tell a story, but they might not be familiar images to Alaskans, he said. Most of the images were shot in various National Parks in Alaska.

“These are pictures of places most people have never seen before,” Gusse said.

Museum Curator Bethany Buckingham said that’s true for Alaskans and tourists alike since many of the parks featured require an expensive plane ticket to access.

Buckingham said Gusse has been a longtime supporter of the museum and his work has been featured in other shows. But this is the first time his work has been featured in a solo show, she said.

“We enjoy having local artists come in and show their art,” Buckingham said.

She said artists should contact the museum if they are interested in showing their art in the space.

“This is a wonderful little museum that almost no one knows exists,” Gusse said.
