PALMER — This Saturday, the Palmer Art Walk is celebrating everything “Alaska Native” at the Palmer Midsummer Garden and Art Faire. Stops will pay tribute to Alaska Native foods, plants and artists, and each location features a specially made container to be entered in a silent auction to support the faire.
The walk will run from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. but will then be relocated next to the information booth on the green until 6 p.m. to give folks an opportunity to do some last minute bidding. Winners will be announced at the end of the faire at 6 p.m., prior to the Ken Peltier Band’s performance. Here’s the list of stops and what can be found at each one:
1 Alaskan Artisans & Crafters will have several items on display and available for purchase inside the Turkey Red banquet room.
Arkose Brewery is hosting a Beer Meets Canvas event from 2 to 4 p.m. For $30, attendees get one pint and all the art supplies needed to create individual works of art. This event is open only to those 21 years of age or older and pre-registration is required.
3 Fireside Books brings back the search for Waldo. Walkers can pick up a Waldo passport and check off all 24 Palmer shops that are hiding him by the end of July to be eligible for prizes. The store also is hosting a reading of Mo Willem’s Pigeon books and a bookmaking event inspired by the main character. In addition, owner and glass artist for Borealis Baubles Jessa S. Joehnk will have work on display and be available for questions.
2 B. Bella is a new addition to the Art Walk and will host painters and brother-sister duo Dan Pollock and Betty Pierce.
6 The Valley Quilters Guild will be sewing, gardening, and selling quilted crafts as a warm-up for the Alaska State Fair. Tickets for their raffle can be purchased at the Palmer Depot during the Art Walk.
8 The Palmer Museum is hosting the Smithsonian Institute’s Museums on Main Street exhibit, “Key Ingredients: America by Food,” which explores the history of food culture in the United States. Artist Pat Garley and gardener Alicia Greene also have paired up to create a sculptural container for the museum to be entered in the faire’s silent auction. The string quintet, Quint A Volo, will perform in the Agricultural Showcase Garden at 11 a.m., 1 p.m. and 3 p.m., and SL Cook Pottery will demonstrate the raku firing process in front of the museum with blacksmith Vince Bergkampf.
7 Covers Ups is an “upcycled” furniture and apparel store contributing to the Art Walk with their items made from repurposed materials.
