Palmer Second Saturday Evening Art Walk

Celebrate Alaska artists and their creations at the Palmer Second Saturday Evening Art Walk Jan. 11. Highlights this month include a paper snowflake-making project called the Gift of Snow project for Newtown, Conn., and pasta making at NonEssentials with pasta aficionado Marian Romano.

Pickup a passport — our use this page in the Frontiersman — to collect stamps on your visa from the participating merchants and when complete, drop off your entry form at the Palmer Museum of History and Art to be entered into a drawing for a Second Saturday gift basket

Eagle Hotel, 918 S. Colony Way

1. This newly renovated hotel will be open for business to serve meals in the restaurant (in case you get hungry along the walk) and will be hosting Alaskan Native skin sewer June Pardue in the lobby. June will also teach a fur sewing class at the Palmer Museum starting June 19, so be sure to stop by and ask her for more details.

Cover Ups, 840 S. Colony Way

2. Cover Ups will be extending its regular business hours so it can host Cat Dossett, a talented photographer who is also a skilled muralist and painter. She will be displaying paintings, drawings and chalkboard art along with her photography. There will also be a free photo booth if you stop by for a visit.

Valley Arts Alliance, 723 S. Valley Way

3. Palmer Museum grounds. Artists from Valley Arts Alliance will be displaying and modeling outfits from their past Wearable Art Show. Stop on by to see just how creative this bunch can be and be sure to keep your hands away from their pet dragon — he’s known to bite!

Palmer Museum, 723 S. Valley Way

4. Palmer Museum is hosting a reception for its newly installed exhibit, “Emptying Out The Closet,” a collection of outfits from the Valley Arts Alliance annual Wearable Art Runway and Fashion Show. The museum is also inviting the public to stop by and create a paper snowflake for its Gift of Snow project. The project was developed to support the Connecticut PTSA in its efforts to show solidarity for the families of Newtown, Conn. The snowflakes will be used to create a display that the museum will photograph and send to the community of Newtown.

Palmer Saroma Kai, 655 S. Valley Way

5. Palmer Public Library. This group is dedicated to providing encouragement and support toward the sister city relationship between Palmer and Saroma, Japan. Stop by the Palmer Library for a celebration of the Japanese New Year. Try your hand at kakizome (first calligraphy of the New Year) and origami, find out about your Edo (Japanese zodiac), and warm up with a cup of green tea. At 5 p.m., the Palmer Chamber and BP will host an extravagant fireworks display to help us all bring in the New Year with a bang.

Garden Gate, 111 W. Evergreen Ave.

6. Garden Gate has been around Palmer for a while, but has relocated and set up shop closer to what locals call Main Street. It will celebrate its grand opening at the new location and offer a wide selection of artistic goodies for everyone.

NuKreationZ Art and Activity Center, 735 S. Bailey St.

7. NuKreationZ Art and Activity Center is a new art and creativity center in Palmer that will offer children and the young at heart an opportunity to create their own masterpieces out of clay from 3 to 5 p.m. For a $3 donation, you will be given a ball of clay and NuKreationZ will help you glaze and fire it so you can share your creation with friends and family.

NonEssentials, 550 S. Alaska St.

8. Nonessentials is opening up the kitchen and will host Marian Romano, a pasta aficionado, who will teach how to make homemade noodles at noon and 3 p.m. Classes are $7.50 and space is limited, so be sure to stop by early.

Fireside Books, 720 S. Alaska St.

9. Fireside Books is extending its regular business hours and will display paper cranes as a part of the Palmer Museum’s Gift of Snow project, as well as offering the public an opportunity to add cranes to the window display.

Sidekicks TLC and More, 642 S. Alaska St.

10. Sidekicks will host Cherise Hyslip, prophetic painter and handcrafter, who will be in the store from 4 to 6 p.m. to share about her artwork and handcrafted items on display and for sale in the store. She will share her words of inspiration and encouragement for her passion in the art world. There will also be a table with paper and glitter opulence available to create your own snowflake and hang in the window as a part of the Gift of Snow project.

Alaska Artisans and Crafters, 550 S. Alaska St.

11. Alaska Artisans and Crafters will set up at Turkey Red with a wide selection of art and crafts on display and for purchase just in case you have to acquire that last minute post-Christmas gift.

Chickadee’s, Corner of Arctic Way and the Glenn Highway

12. Chickadee’s antiques/local goods/consignment shop is well worth a visit. Chickadee’s will be open past its regular business hours to offer the public an opportunity to browse through the store. It just received a great selection of vintage cast-iron cookware.
