Retiring teacher, coach urges Colony grads to ‘find their 68’

Paul Aitken, 65, died in his home on Jan. 21, 2018. Paul was born in Manhattan and lived in and around New York City until he graduated from high school. Paul loved cooking, travel, trivia, history, baseball, and music. He was a DJ at SUNY Oswego. He received his Bachelor’s Degree in Communications and Semantics. He definitely knew how to make his point known.Paul met his wife of 27 years, Ann, in Louisiana. He was proud that he was in the last class of Diploma Nursing Graduates of Charity Hospital, a local legend in New Orleans. He liked working in the Operating Room and after his preceptorship, he became a travel nurse and they moved around the country. He worked on his Master’s Degree in Health Care Administration, then worked in Colorado and Alaska. Paul spent several years at Alaska Surgery Center, enjoying cooking for his staff and making sure everyone had copies of the daily crossword puzzle if they were inclined to come in and get their brain working while they were drinking that first cup of coffee. He was a dedicated volunteer with Alaska Dog and Puppy Rescue for 15 years. He worked with medical dogs, served on the Board of Directors and as President of the group. He was a primary fundraiser with the Mardi Gras Bow Wow Ball. He would help anyone needing help with a dog. He is survived by his wife, Ann Metts Aitken Kenai, Scruffy and Patches Aitken, a motley and loveable canine crew; nieces and nephews: Randi Smith (Adam), Sheila Brashear (Tony), Preston Cauley (Joy), Jessica Ann Metts, and Albert S Metts of the Gulf Coast; grandnephew Lincoln Smith and grandniece Everette Smith. Paul is also survived by his Mother, Alice O’Rourke Aitken of New Port Richey Florida; his siblings, John, Peter, Nora, and Susan; as well as their children. He was preceded in death by his father, Robert W Aitken. A service will be held at Valley Church of Christ, 1125 Majestic View Circle in Wasilla at 3 p.m. on April 1, 2018. Refreshments will be served. Arrangements with Kehl’s Palmer Chapel.
