WASILLA — Just in time for New Year’s resolutions, Planet Fitness is announcing that they will be the latest to set up shop at The Shoppes At Sun Mountain. Opening in late February, the 25,000 square foot fitness facility will be the first Planet Fitness location in the Valley and feature state of the art exercise equipment, according to owner Dan Afrasiabi.
“Planet Fitness’ model is based on creating a really comfortable place for everyday people who want to work out and improve their lives,” said Afrasiabi.
The current home to the Sonic Drive-In, The Shoppes At Sun Mountain continues to add new businesses to fill out the location. Afrasiabi said that it was crucial to attract a tenant like Planet Fitness that will encourage residents to visit Sun Mountain. Valley residents looking to work out at Planet Fitness can sign up already through the gym’s website. With 1,800 Planet Fitness locations nationwide, Afrasiabi says that the gym will refresh their equipment every five years. Keeping the cardio equipment state-of-the-art helps attract gym-goers nationwide. Afrasiabi said that hiring will soon begin for the 20 staff members to work at the Planet Fitness location. The 24-hour a day gym provides a judgement free zone for residents to work out without feeling the need to lift heavy weights.
“The Wasilla club will the be crown jewel in our entire club network,” said Afrasiabi.
Afrasiabi said that Planet Fitness offers only two rates for memberships, with the Black Card membership including tanning, ‘happy light’ machines called beauty angels, massage chairs and hydro massage chairs and members can use any other Planet Fitness location with the black card membership. Afrasiabi hopes that he can accomodate 10,000 members in the Valley when Planet Fitness opens next spring.
