WASILLA — Alaska Family Services’ sixth annual Recovery Month Celebration “It’s Worth It” is from 1 to 4 p.m., Sept. 15 at its office at 5851 E. Mayflower Ct.
This free community event includes recovery speakers, free food, door prizes, sober celebrations and information tables highlighting additional community resources.
Each September during Recovery Month, communities across the country join together to increase awareness of mental and/or substance use disorders and emphasize that while the road to recovery may be difficult, the benefits of preventing and overcoming these conditions are significant and valuable to everyone in a community. This month-long observance celebrates individuals in recovery and families who have supported these individuals, as well as those who work in the prevention, treatment and recovery field.
An estimated 52,000 people in Alaska and 23.2 million people in the United States suffer from substance use disorders. Every year, 6,039 people in Alaska and 4 million people nationally are able to receive the treatment they need.
Each September, Recovery Month works to spread awareness of the importance of making substance-use-disorders treatment services accessible.
