Season kicks off with start of Match Golf tourney

The Army-Air Force Match Golf Tournament is starting up its second year in action at Joint Base Elmendorf-Richardson’s Moose Run Golf Course, scheduled to be in full swing by June 2.

The tournament is open to all active duty, retirees, Department of Defense employees and dependents; two-person teams must register by May 31.

“This season-long, match play tournament is limited to 32 teams,” said Donald Kramer, Moose Run Golf Course general manager. “One of the most convenient things about this tournament is the opposing teams are able to coordinate with each other to schedule the matches. So as long as teams play every two weeks, they will be done by the Labor Day tournament end.”

Although this tournament is considered competitive and is mainly geared towards advanced golfers, Moose Run offers a lot of other exciting opportunities all summer long, Kramer said.

“We want people to come out and make use of such

a beautiful relaxing place and just have some fun,” Kramer said. “We want everyone to have an opportunity to learn about this sport and take advantage of the great low-cost programs offered.

“For example, the Air Force Services Agency sponsors a ‘Kids Drive Free’ program from June 1 through August 31. Our Junior Golf Camp sessions are also scheduled every month this summer.”

Through the Single Airman program, Wingman Golf is available. Interested participants need to bring at least one single any-service member friend and the pair will be provided free golf, a cart and a bucket of balls to warm up with.

“I am looking forward to the availability of having a top-notch golf course on base,” said Airman 1st Class Clark Albers, 3rd Maintenance Squadron aerospace maintenance journeyman and golfer. “Coming to Alaska as a golfer has its challenges, such as a lack of courses and long winters. The convenience of having Moose Run Golf Course here allows new all the way to experienced golfers the opportunity to try golf or continue improving their game.”

Some of this year’s other tournaments include the Summer Solstice Midnight Sun Tournament, a two person scramble, June 21; the Red, White and Blue Tournament, July 4; and the 2018 Demo Fest – a multi-vendor demo day with concessions, music, a visit from trick-shot artist and world long-drive Masters champion, Jeff Crittenden, as well as ‘Starting New at Golf’ golf for juniors.

The course will also host the Arctic Valley Open, July 21 and 22 and a one-person Scramble Aug. 19.
