PALMER — Palmer’s monthly art walk is scheduled for the second Saturday of each month. Here is a list of participating businesses and activities planned at each location on this month’s walk, which is from 3 to 7 p.m., May 11.
This month, Rusty's will host a kite festival during the Art Walk.
To be eligible for the Art Walk raffle, people need to visit 10 of the featured stops and walkers acquire kite tails at each venue visited. This month’s prize basket includes a gift certificate for a dinner for two at Rusty's, movie tickets and various other goodies.
1. Arkose Brewery, 650 E. Steel Loop
Arkose Brewery is owned by Stephen and June Gerteisen. Stephen is an accomplished master brewer while June is an accomplished artist. Together, they are hosting Beer Meets Canvas from 2 to 4 p.m., in which Arkose provides one pint or a flight of four tasters and art supplies you can use to create your own masterpiece. Beer Meets Canvas is only open to those 21 years or older and costs $30 per person. Space is limited to 10 people, so sign up early.
2. The Gallery, 1150 S. Colony Way
The Gallery will showcase the work of Anchorage artist Robert Clayton from 11 a.m. to 5 p.m. He is an Alaska winning artist who is comfortable painting figurative, wildlife and his favorite subject — landscapes.
3. Cover Ups, 840 S. Colony Way
Cover Ups, a popular Palmer up-cycle shop, will feature the Valley community as its artist this month. Art Walkers who stop there can add their special touch to the Cover Ups' paper mosaic kite.
4. Midnight Sun Yoga Center, 832 S. Colony Way No. 2

5. NuKreationZ, 723 S. Bailey St.
NuKreationZ will host a Raku pottery activity from 2 to 4 p.m. where visitors will be able to paint their own pottery and have it fired while you wait. Cost of this activity depends on which piece of pottery you select. Prices begin at $15.
6. Garden Gate, 111 W. Evergreen Ave.
Stay cozy on Kite Day with one of their warm scarves and a pair of practical and stylish foxgloves in bright kite tail colors! Pick up something from their Kite Day Special table. It's loaded with colorful gloves, scarves and plenty of style for a grand Art Walk day out on the town.
7. Non-Essentials, 728 S. Alaska St.
A cooking frenzy is planned at Non-Essentials during this month's Art Walk. Two classes will be offered: the first with Lisa Carrick of “Peak-a-Boo" egg fame, will be teaching a hands-on croissant class. After initial prep, students will return for shaping and baking. Students will leave with new skills, a recipe and fabulous fresh croissants. Cost is $20 and class size is limited to 10 students.
The second class, at 2 and 4 p.m., is with Brenda Martin, homestead maven of Inua farms, who will walk students through the process of making handmade laundry soap. These soaps may be beneficial for those with respiratory problems or skin allergies. Students will walk away with a soap recipe, new skills and laundry soap. Cost is $10 and class size is limited to 10 students.
8. Fireside Books, 720 S. Alaska St.
Fireside Books will host an author meet and greet with Burt Bomhoff, author of "IDITAROD ALASKA: Life of a Long Distance Sled Dog Musher," beginning at 11:30 a.m.
9. Vagabond Blues, 642 S. Alaska St.
Savor a cup of coffee and enjoy the artwork of artist Kristy Thom-Bernier.
10. Sidekicks, TLC & More, 642 S. Alaska St.
Side Kicks Gifts will host a show of work by Laura Pinnick, local handcrafter of all things baby and owner/artist of Krafts with Kare. Side Kicks will also have a drawing for two kites that evening.
11. Alaskan Artisans and Crafters, 550 S. Alaska St., in Turkey Red’s banquet room
This wonderful group is comprised of several artists who will be stationed in the banquet room at Turkey Red beginning at 11 a.m. The group includes: By the Spirit Photography with Barbie Wagner (who is their featured artist this month), Alaska Spirit Crafts with Bonnie Brummett, Scentsy with Jennifer Mistler, Far North Creations with Judy Ehrlich (goat milk soaps), Semper Fab with Lisa Flanik Streicher (fabric aprons, bags and crocheted beaded necklaces), Bowls by Ben, Susan's Crafts, 907 Noggins, Su'z Creations, Snowflake Crafts, Gayle's Gifts by Gayle Touch of Alaska, Cobb's Metal Art by Cara Cobb and Piece of Alaska.
12. Shane Lamb Gallery, 550 S Alaska St.
Shane Lamb is the featured artist this month. Stop by and see his new 2013 photography releases featuring ravens, moose, mountains, Sandhill cranes and more. The gallery also will have a Name That Print contest during the Art Walk. If your suggestion is chosen, you will win a print of the image you helped name.
13. Palmer Deli, 550 S. Alaska St.
The Palmer Deli will host crayon artist Gretchen Sharpe-Swart and Alaska Native artist Barbara Apangalook.
14. Healing Path Therapeutic Massage, 550 S. Alaska St.
For second Saturday in May, Healing Path Therapeutic Massage will provide Massage in the Mall at a discount to participants of the Art Walk from 10 a.m. to 7 p.m. Massage for $1 per minute at the Downtown Palmer Plaza. Stop by or call ahead to reserve your time. This month, the featured artist is Charlene Renz, owner and quilter of Pretty Pieces by Charlene. There will be small quilted items using Alaskana and other flattering materials for sale.
15. Sustainable Design Group, 550 S. Alaska St.
Sustainable Design Groupwill host a show of work metal artist Holly Gittlein.
16. Chickadee’s, Corner of E. Arctic Ave. and Glenn Highway
Chickadee’s will host a variety of garden art, so be sure to take a peek at some of their unique finds and creations.
17. Rusty’s, 320 E. Dahlia Ave.
This month's raffle sponsor has plenty in store for the Art Walk. Rusty's will host its third annual Kite Festival on the green adjacent to their building from noon to 6 p.m. with kite demos by AlasKiters and a live performance by Gerygone and Twig from 2 to 4 p.m. Rusty will be on the patio preparing some delicious prime rib.
18. Palmer Public Library , 655 S. Valley Way
Palmer Library will host Big Brothers, Big Sisters of Alaska. This great group will be available to share more information about their organization and will offer Art Walkers an opportunity to build their own bubble wands.
19. Palmer Museum, 723 S. Valley Way
The Palmer Museum will feature the temporary exhibit “Upcycle,” a collection of artwork comprised of recyclable materials. Stop by and see what amazing things you can create with everyday items that have been discarded. The museum will also offer Art Walkers an opportunity to decorate and build their own kite. All materials will be provided for this free craft event, so be sure to stop by early while supplies last. Outside on the patio, Non-Essentials will fire up its barbecue and offer quick hot dog meals for $7.50, which includes a hot dog, potato salad and a dessert.
