The incumbent in the race, Dunleavy is a former educator and school administrator with a career spanning the state of Alaska. He came to the legislature from the Mat-Su Borough School Board.
Dunleavy is in favor of school choice — including allowing students to use public money to take courses at religious schools — and says the state needs to cut the budget.
He is socially conservative and makes no bones about it.
He believes himself to be an effective legislator and says that’s why people should vote for him.
Running as an independent, Keogh is a Vietnam veteran, former paramedic and a Chickaloon resident.
On the issues, Keogh does not believe that students should be able to publicly fund courses at religious institutions. He agrees with his opponent that the budget needs to be cut.
Keogh said when he left the Mat-Su Borough Assembly, he’d planned on staying out of the fray but felt compelled to return, both at the urging of people he talked to and because he believes Dunleavy and his colleagues have allowed out-of-control spending.
