Simulators prepare JBER troops for deployment

Many Soldiers and Airmen have never experienced convoy or combat situations. The Mission Training Complex on JBER provides training simulations to help these Soldiers and Airmen succeed downrange.

“At the MTC, we maintain equipment, conduct convoy missions, conduct live-fire, duplicate field missions and provide virtual training,” said Min Chong, an MTC computer-based training instructor/specialist. “We help the Soldiers or Airmen who have never had training, improve before they get on the battlefield where the stakes are much higher.”

The two main convoy simulations offered are the Virtual Clearance Training Suite and the Reconfigurable Vehicle Tactical Trainer.

The RVTT provides combat-patrol scenarios for units to learn to react to improvised explosive devices, small-arms fire and other drills. The scenarios are also recorded to give the units a detailed look into how they performed and how they can improve.

VCTS provides route-clearance training through vehicle simulators to train collectively or to provide individual skill training. Training instructors can modify scenario conditions and events to include IED explosions, weather conditions, terrain and malfunctions.

“While RVTT and VCTS training simulators provide different experiences, both include hands-on training and an after-action review to review how the unit reacted to the simulation,” said Russ Beauvais, MTC director.

The convoy simulations provide Soldiers and Airmen the tools to train to the level of proficiency needed.

“The purpose of the simulations is to facilitate and help guide units to improve as a group and as individuals,” Chong said. “The MTC is the perfect place to make mistakes.”

The MTC supports all units’ requests for hands-on training including the Junior ROTC. Training can vary from basic checkpoints to extreme simulations.
