The Alaska Department of Education and Early Development Child Nutrition Programs is accepting applications from community sponsors to operate summer food service programs for children in low-income areas.
Child Nutrition Programs is asking school districts, parks and recreation departments, nonprofit organizations, units of local government, tribal agencies, residential and non-residential camps and faith-based programs to consider operating a Summer Food Service Program for children and youth.
Sponsors provide free meals to children and are reimbursed for the number of meals served based on a federal rate. This is the single largest federal resource available for local sponsors that combine feeding programs with summer enrichment or recreational programs.
Alaska Department of Education and Early Development administers the Summer Food Service Program with funds from the U.S. Department of Agriculture. It is available to children regardless of race, color, national origin, sex, age or disability.
