The Sunday at Two concert series is a free, family-friendly occasion that happens monthly at the Palmer Train Depot on Sunday at 2pm. Musicians play their hearts out at these concerts. It’s a classy and cordial community event put on by the friends of the Palmer Public Library.
Last Sunday featured the Palmer High School Jazz Band and Choir program from Palmer High School, directed by Barbara Carroll. The Jazz Band from Palmer Jr. Middle School, directed by Chris Loescher, also performed. To finish things off, both schools and music directors played a number of pieces together. This is rather unusual but it was fun for both bands and the audience.
Palmer Mayor Edna DeVries, School Board Member Debbi Retherford and Palmer City Councilman Pete LaFrance were in the audience supporting the musicians. Audience members donated sums of money directly back to support programming at the Palmer Public Library. This is the way synergy works in the community of Palmer.
Palmer Cub Scout Troop 354 were the ones to voluntarily help set up for the event and then stay long afterwards to clean up. They also brought refreshments to share.
The Palmer band wasn’t the first to play at the depot event. Back in November the Colony High School Marching band did the same thing. The common denominators between both concerts are the wonderful iconic Palmer Train Depot and the equally wonderful Palmer Library. Both schools support the library, despite the pressing individual needs of each musical group. This is how community is built…one good deed at a time.
