There is a clear difference between law-abiding trappers and poachers

The recent news story regarding the illegal activities such as using illegally taken moose meat for trap bait is appalling, but makes several important points.

First and foremost, there is a clear and distinct difference between the activities of law-abiding trappers as contrasted with poachers such as the charged individual.

The vast majority of trappers are aware of and work studiously to obey the many rules and regulations that govern this traditional outdoor activity.

The reason we do not see more stories like this, shows that the law-breakers are a tiny minority.

Next, the public should be aware that the violations here are condemned by the Alaska Trappers Association and all legal, ethical trappers. In fact, ATA believes that the charges involved may be too light. We think that the wildlife crimes involved here deserve more severe punishment.

And finally, kudos to the Alaska Wildlife Troopers for their work in bringing this law-breaker to justice. This case shows that even in the cold months when hunting and fishing are at a low ebb, these officers are out in the elements, using technology and plain hard work, protecting our wildlife resources and bringing the criminal element to justice. We applaud and support their efforts.
