Valley Mover marks 4 years

MAT-SU — Since Mokie and Roberta Tew founded Valley Mover in March 2010, the nonprofit transit service has grown to serve about 500 people every weekday across the Mat-Su and Anchorage boroughs.

Riders currently can hop aboard at one of three Valley locations to embark on one of 15 round trips per day from the Valley to Anchorage, and two to Eagle River. Riders can catch the bus at Mile 50, Parks Highway at the Fred Meyer parking lot, or at the Trunk Road Park and Ride. Riders get off the bus at Anchorage Transit Center, Museum and Northway Mall in Anchorage.

And, according to Robbie Wuitschick, executive director of Valley Mover, riders may soon be able to travel to Anchorage’s U-Med District directly from the Valley. If a State Transportation Grant is approved, the expanded routes would begin service July 1.

Wuitschick said another grant waiting for approval would pay the way for veterans to ride free.

Whether that grant comes through, veterans will still be offered free transportation to the “Home Coming Celebration” from 4 to 8 p.m., March 29 at the Egan Convention and Visitors Center in Anchorage.

Other contracts the transit service has inked provide free rides to students, faculty, staff and employees from Mat-Su Borough School District, UAA, Alaska Job Corps Center and ConocoPhillips.

Valley Mover fares are $7 one-way, $10 round trip and $120 for a monthly pass.
