MAT-SU — Volunteers are needed for Alaska Shield, a statewide earthquake preparation exercise scheduled March 28 through April 1. It is important people are prepared because experts say a catastrophic earthquake in Alaska is a matter of when, not if.
This will be the largest year with more than 400 federal, state and local agencies participating. Medical practitioners and mock patients are needed as volunteers. The training exercise will test procedures and equipment to evaluate effectiveness and identify weaknesses.
This year’s exercise marks the 50th anniversary of the 1964 Good Friday earthquake.
Visions Meeting and Event Management is coordinating most aspects of the event, including the registration process, luncheons and medical transport exercise of “victims” to hospitals throughout the state.
