WASILLA — An estimated 40 percent to 50 percent of people with leg pain can be helped through state-of-the-art treatment options offered at the new Laser Vein Center of the Mat-Su Valley, 851 E. Westpoint Drive, Suite B-1.
Symptoms associated with vein problems can often be debilitating and interfere with activities of daily living. Individuals may experience swelling, lower extremity fatigue, heaviness, aching, throbbing, itching and burning.
In severe cases, skin ulceration (sores) with associated pain, bleeding and risk of infection can occur. Additionally, the risk of forming clots in the leg veins increases.
Proper treatment of malfunctioning veins relieves associated leg pain 80 percent to 90 percent of the time. Although legs have a better cosmetic appearance when treatment is completed, the treatment of leg vein disease is often confused with being merely cosmetic in nature.
Varicose veins are the most common type of vein problem, tending to worsen over time, but are not always visible. Complicating factors include standing occupations, pregnancy and family history of leg problems.
Varicose veins often bulge under the skin after becoming dilated when the vein walls become weakened. As a result, the vein valves do not close properly allowing back flow of blood that results in further vein bulging and lower extremity symptoms.
Diagnostic techniques such as physical examination and non-invasive ultrasound are important tools in identifying the severity of the disease process. These results are used to create your unique treatment plan.
The Laser Vein Center of the Mat-Su Valley is owned and operated by Dr. Donald Ives, who is board-certified in phlebology and is a registered physician in vascular interpretation.
Previously from Fairbanks, Dr. Gary Kindell and his wife, Sharon, have joined the Laser Vein Center. Sharon is a registered nurse the clinic coordinator of the Laser Vein Center.
