Wasilla wants stellar spellers

WASILLA — Can you spell better than a 14-year-old?

Find out July 26, as the Wasilla Meta-Rose Public Library hosts an adult spelling bee. Beginning at 6:30 p.m., the bee will be held at the old schoolhouse on the Historic Town Site behind the library.

Participants may want to bone up before feeling too confident about spelling better than a teen. Consider the words for the past two Scripps National Spelling Bee winners, both 14:

• Guetapens, spelled correctly by Snigdha Nandipati, an 8th-grader from San Diego, Calif. Guetapens is a noun of French origin that means an ambush or trap.

• Cymotrichous, spelled correctly by Sukanya Roy or Wilkes-Barre, Penn. Cymotrichous is an adjective that means having wavy hair.

The bee is limited to 20 adult spellers age 18 and older. Winner of the adult spelling bee will receive a $100 gas card. To register, call Jean Powell at the library at 864-9177.
