Hatchery tours: Ever wonder what goes on at the William Jack Hernandez fish hatchery by the Post Road gate? Take a free tour Tuesdays or Thursdays at 9 a.m. or 1 p.m., or Saturdays at 9 a.m. or 2 p.m. Or just drop in between 8 a.m. and 4 p.m. daily for a self-guided tour and learn about the life cycles of Alaska’s sport fish – salmon, trout and char. Civil Air Patrol: Adult members of the Civil Air Patrol meet at the Aero Club Hangar the first and third Tuesdays of each month. Cadets meet every Saturday. For information or to join, call 350-7951.

Model railroading: The Military Society of Model Railroad Engineers meets at 7 p.m. Tuesday and 1 p.m. Saturday in the basement of Matanuska Hall. Anyone interested in model railroading is invited. AurorA: The Alaska Center for the Performing Arts offers this high-definition show of the northern lights every hour from 9 a.m. to 9 p.m. through Sept. 1. Enjoy the aurora without the cold. For more information, call 263-2993.

Anchorage markets: Whether you’re after produce, souvenirs, or just a reason to get out this summer, Anchorage offers outdoor markets. Wildlife Education Center: Learn about Alaska’s wildlife and natural resources at this free museum, with interactive displays for kids. Byron Glacier hikes: Head south to the Byron Glacier trailhead near Portage Lake and meet with staff from the Begich-Boggs Visitor Center for a guided hike to Byron Glacier.
