PALMER — A pair of the state’s top mountain runners smashed records during the Government Peak Climb Saturday near Palmer.
Christy Marvin, the defending women’s champion in the race, shattered a 7-year-old women’s course record en route to another title. Marvin posted a time of 52 minutes and 29 seconds Saturday, nearly three minutes faster than the prior best of 55:03 set by Taz Mannix in 2007. Marvin was also about five minutes faster than the time of 57:07 that she won the race with last year.
Eric Strabel, who finished second in the Government Peak Climb last year, also broke a course record. Strabel set a new mark with his time of 44:20. That finish is more than two minutes faster than the old mark of 46:27 set by Matt Novakovich in 2012.
The race, hosted by the Colony High School cross-country ski team and the Mat-Su Ski Club, featured a record number of participants in the event. In the men’s race 122 finished. Sixty women also finished the race.
