Valley athletes earn region track and field titles

Valley athletes earned titles during the Region III Championships track and field meet last week at Colony High School.

A pair from Colony and another from Palmer scored a pair of individual wins in the Division I girls class. Colony’s Aubrey Virgin finished first in both the 1,600 and 3,200-meter races. Virgin used a personal best time of 5 minutes, 17.41 seconds to win the 1,600. Virgin clocked a time of 11:42.83 in the 3,200. Annelise Larsen was first in both the long jump and triple jump. Larsen also had a personal best, with a leap of 35 feet to win the triple jump. She was first at 15-9.5 in the long jump.

Palmer’s Leila Petersen was first in both the 200 and 400. She posted times of 25.89 in the 200 and 58.97 in the 400.

The Colony Knights won the Division I boys team title with 140 total points. The Knights dominated the relay events, with wins in the 400, 800 and 1,600 relay races, and a second-place finish in the 3,200 relay.

Triton Ellis was first in the 200 at 23.17. Travis Saari used a personal best time of 51.28 to win the 400. Bryce Lindstrom hit 6-0 and placed first in the high jump.

The Knights placed second in the Division I girls team standings with 102 points, 17 shy of first-place Soldotna. Dominique Porter also won the high jump for the CHS girls, with a mark of 4-10.

Claire Bredberg won the girls discus for Wasilla with a throw of 106-5. Palmer’s Nolan Garner won the boys discus with a personal best mark of 157-1.
