The line in the box score tells of a dominating performance -- a complete-game one-hitter, striking out three and walking only one. The reward for Mike Carlson, the Palmer pitcher who posted that line in Monday's game against Wasilla was a big, fat loss.
After going the distance and allowing only one hit, Carlson took the hard-luck loss, as three second-inning Palmer errors led to three Wasilla runs, the only runs the Warriors would need in a 3-0 victory.
"Mike's only a sophomore, and that was his first complete game. Too bad we booted the ball around a little and couldn't win it," said Palmer manager Steve Mossburgh. "We've got a young team, but we've played Wasilla well the last couple of times."
Wasilla pitcher Tyler Tillery was just as marvelous on the mound. He also tossed a complete game, fanning five Moose and walking just two in the shutout.
He scattered three hits in the game, leading the Warriors to the victory.
Tillery, Dave Sandvik and Cale Cucullu all scored in the second inning without the benefit of a hit.
With the Warriors up 3-0, Wasilla leadoff hitter Matt Rykaczewski opened the third inning with a single, breaking up the no-hit bid. Ironically, he was erased a batter later on a double play.
The Moose were unable to string together any of their hits -- only managing singles in the first, second and third innings. Jonas Dillbeck, J.C. Forrester and Jeremiah Heikes accounted for all the Palmer hits.
