MEADOW LAKES — One person is dead after a house fire Thursday.
Shortly before 7 p.m., Thursday firefighters were sent to a log home on Stanley Drive, which intersects the Parks Highway near Mile 50 in Meadow Lakes.
Borough emergency services director Dennis Brodigan said that log homes burn in a very particular way.
“Once they get going they burn hot and they burn long and they take a long time to extinguish,” he said.
This one was no different — fire crews were on scene until after midnight. And the fire was hot and hard to put out, Brodigan said.
Alaska State Trooper Spokesman Tim Despain said that the home was fully engulfed when responders arrived.
Once the fire had been knocked down, firefighters found one body in the ruins. Brodigan's information ended there. Despain said troopers are still working to identify and notify the victim's next of kin and can't release a name until then.
By late this morning the fire had rekindled, sending crews there a second time. Brodigan said that happens on 10 percent to 20 percent of the fires fought in the borough.
