The National Weather Service has issued a winter weather advisory for both the Matanuska and Susitna valleys due to heavy snow predicted throughout the day.
A storm in Western Alaska is pushing moisture over much of Southcentral, the warning says. High elevations, especially in the Talkeetna Range and Hatcher Pass area, can expect 6 to 12 inches of fresh snow today. The Palmer and Wasilla areas should expect 2 to 5 inches.
The more northern cities of the Susitna Valley will see snow falling at a rate of 2 inches or more every hour. Total snow accumulation in this area is predicted to be 10 to 20 inches.
Winds in the upper atmosphere should push the system out by this evening. The warning is in effect until 9 p.m. tonight
