2 survive Super Cub crash in Rainy Pass

RAINY PASS — Two men survived the crash landing of the small plane they were traveling in on Tuesday.

Talkeetna Alaska State Troopers received a report of a small plane crash at 3:50 p.m., Sept. 3 at Rainy Pass near Ptarmigan Valley.

A witness used his satellite phone to report seeing the plane crash about 4,000 feet up the mountain face. The witness told troopers he had used his spotting scope and saw two occupants get out of the plane.

Rescue Coordination Center and troopers coordinated rescue efforts and arrived at the scene around 6 p.m., troopers say in a dispatch about the plane crash and subsequent search and rescue.

Pilot Cole Hawkins, 28, of Chugiak and his passenger, Richard Novotny, 29, of Wasilla survived the Super Cub crash, but were transported to Providence Alaska Medical Center in Anchorage and treated for minor injuries.

A National Transportation Safety Board investigation continues.
