Mat-Su Health Foundation scholarships

MAT-SU — The Mat-Su Health Foundation recently awarded 67 scholarships totaling $250,000 to residents of the Mat-Su Borough pursuing health-related careers.

Two scholarships were given in honor of revered and respected former employees of Valley Hospital.

The Annie Demming Scholarship was awarded to Maryann Zmuda. This scholarship is given in honor of Annie Demming, who served as director of the medical records department for Valley Hospital and retired after 28 years of service.

The Vivian Shaver Scholarship was awarded to Renee Vingoe. This scholarship is given in honor of Vivian “Babe” Shaver, who worked at Valley Hospital and died in 1978.

Mat-Su Schools Foundation scholarships

The Mat-Su Schools Foundation recently awarded eight student scholarships.

First Student $2,000 scholarship winners are Sabrina Holm, Wasilla High School; Helen Michaelson, Colony High School; DaJonee Hale, Burchell High School; Morgan McVeigh, Wasilla High School; Neil Reutov, Beryozova School; and, Hayden Niekamp, Palmer High.

2013 Curtis D. Menard Memorial Scholarship $1,000 winners are Hope Spargo of Wasilla High School and Cameron Christiansen of Twindly Bridge Charter School.

Valley Golf Association scholarships

The 2013 Valley Golf Association offered $5,000 in scholarships for the 2013-14 school year. During the last 20 years, the VGA has awarded more than $120,000 in scholarships to local students.

The winners of this year’s $1,000 scholarships are:

Sydney Brazeau, Susitna Valley High School; Helen Michaelson, Colony High School; Kyler Perry, Wasilla High School; Jennifer Rider, Colony High School; and Hope Spargo, Wasilla High School.
