Retiring teacher, coach urges Colony grads to ‘find their 68’

WASILLA — The Mat-Su Education Association met recently to honor this year’s “Champions for Children” at Evangelo’s Restaurant. Teachers have the opportunity to nominate businesses and individuals who have helped them throughout the school year.
This year’s keynote speaker was Larry Ouelette, who taught in the Mat-Su district for more than 25 years and is a former “champion” (recipient of the award).
Last year, he was recognized for his dedication to Special Olympics, Challenge Alaska and numerous other community organizations over the years. This year, in his keynote speech, he gave a message about the importance of giving back to our community.
The Mat-Su Youth Orchestra, directed by Shaw Elementary School music teacher Kai West, provided the musical entertainment for the evening.
The 2015 Mat-Su Education Association Champions for Children are: Palmer Lions Club — Stacey Lobdell, Nancy Albertson and Carri Feaster; Meadow Lakes Bloomers; Wasilla Lions Club — Cyndi Jernstrom and Tillie Lucas; Snowshoe Elementary PTA — SandiKay Cannon and Rod Mumma; Linda Jo Klapperich, Palmer Junior Middle School teacher; Tracey Martin, Meadow Lakes teacher; and Tim Walters, MSEA President, who organized the 2015 Champions for Children event.
