SEWARD — The men’s record in the annual Mount Marathon race once again belongs to an Alaskan.

Alaska Pacific University skier David Norris of Anchorage wrecked the 2015 record set by Spanish Salomon athlete Kilian Jornet Burgada by 22 seconds, finishing the 3.1-mile race up and down the 3,022-foot mountain in 41 minutes and 26 seconds.

The 2016 Mount Marathon race was Norris’s first, which he qualified for by winning the Robert Spurr Memorial Hill Climb — another race in the Alaska Mountain Running series — last month.

Norris said he wasn’t expecting to win his rookie year, though announcer Mike Janecek reported the APU athlete was 51 seconds ahead of last year’s record at the turnaround point at the top of the mountain.

“I felt really good on the uphill ... but I was pretty sure there were a few guys who could outrun me (on the downhill),” Norris said.

Though he didn’t have the fastest downhill split — that accomplishment went to Ben Marvin of Palmer, who rocketed down the mountain in 10:37 — it wasn’t enough to keep Norris from winning.

Nick Elson from Squamish, British Columbia was second across the Fourth Street finish line in 43:05, followed by third-place finisher and former Mount Marathon champion Eric Strabel of Palmer.

Strabel, a 2000 Colony High School graduate, saw his third fastest time on the mountain on Monday, finishing in 44:19. He said he saw Norris as a significant competitor going in, though he “wasn’t doing the math,” he said, or wearing a watch during the race to know how close the rookie was to finishing under 42 minutes.

“He was definitely pushing the record pace on the way up, but I didn’t know how he’d do on the way down, and that was the big question mark,” Strabel said.

Another concern of Strabel’s was the snowfield many racers slide down near the top of the mountain, which he said was thinner and faster than usual.

“I previewed it yesterday, and I was, it was scary,” he said.

Talk of Strabel and Marvin being launched onto rocks at the end of the snowy chute on their treks down the mountain earlier this weekend was on the lips of many a hiker the day before the race, warning less experienced climbers to take the longer, rocky route down.

Still, the conditions were apparently not so dire as to prevent Strabel, Marvin and Lyon Kopsack, also of Palmer, from claiming spots in the top 10.

Kopsack saw his first top-10 finish on Monday, taking sixth behind Anchorage’s Scott Patterson and Wisconsin’s Ricky Gates with a time of 45:39 — 50 seconds faster than his 2015 finish.

Kopsack said he was “pretty tired” right after the race.

“I didn’t have my climbing legs under me ... so it was a little different (than last year). I had to force myself to run a lot,” he said.

Though he was gunning for top 5 when he knew he was close, Kopsack was happy with his finish.

“I just wanna thank God for keeping me safe up there,” he said. “It’s awesome to be able to have this ability but it’s up to me what I do with it.”

Marvin called Kopsack “inspiring,” and was glad they could both break into the single-digit-place finishes this year.

“I finally had a good race,” Marvin said.

Marvin took eighth this year with a time of 46:13, his fastest yet. His highest place was in 2014 when he took seventh.

Meanwhile, Strabel said he’s hoping to fill out the top 10 all by himself someday.

“It’s been kind of a big goal of mine to have every single place in the top 10, and I hadn’t gotten third yet, so I’m really happy about that,” he said.

Strabel hasn’t placed fifth or ninth yet either, he said, but he’s looking to climb back up to no. 1 first.

“I’m making my way,” he said.
