WASILLA — The first musher in the 2017 Iditarod has hit the Yukon River.

Girdwood’s Nicolas Petit followed his team into Tanana at 6:44 p.m. Tuesday evening to earn the Lakefront Anchorage First Musher to the Yukon Award. The prize includes a five-course meal prepared by Lakefront Anchorage’s executive chef. The meal — which features Alaska cioppino, smoked duck and lamb loin chops — is accompanied by a $3,500 cash prize.

As of the moment Petit hit the Tanana checkpoint, the Iditarod veteran led a field of 71 mushers still on the trail. As of early Tuesday evenings, there were still no scratches in the race, and 50 mushers were out of Manley en route to Tanana.

The race started Monday morning in Fairbanks.
