2018 primary: Johnson defeats DeVries in District 11 Republican primary

WASILLA — DeLena Johnson spent her afternoon, just as she had the last few weekdays. The House District 11 candidate stood on the Old Glenn Highway overpass with supporters waving to oncoming traffic on the Glenn Highway.

Later Tuesday, after about three hours in the rain, Johnson found someplace dry to await the results of Alaska’s primary election.

“I cam home and got warmed up and was basically ready to just watch returns come in,” Johnson said late Tuesday night.

Just before midnight, with ballots from six of the nine precincts and 66 percent of the votes reported, Johnson held about a 300-vote lead over Edna DeVries in a battle of the last two Palmer mayors. Johnson, a former Palmer mayor, held 57 percent of the vote as of 11:45 p.m. Tuesday. DeVries, the current Palmer mayor, was at just less than 43 percent.

By Wednesday morning, 100 percent had been counted and Johnson had won 58 to 41 percent.

“I think the trend is in my favor. I think it would be kind of hard to change it up, but I am certainly waiting until I get them all,” Johnson said of the results.

Johnson said she entered election day feeling, “really peaceful.”

“I’ve talked to a lot of people,” Johnson said. “I felt really good about it going into it even when some people were saying it would be super close. But you never know.”

Earlier in the day Johnson and her supporters smiled and waved to ongoing traffic. Johnson said the crew spent about three hours on Thursday and Friday of last week and Monday, before returning for one final push on election day. Johnson joked that she wants 200 honks, one honk per car, before she can go home. She even had an official honk counter, who kept track with rocks on the side of the road.

The battle for House District 11 is one of three key Valley races that have been controlled by incumbents.

In House District 9, with ballots from nine of the 11 precincts in, Rauscher held just under 50 percent of the vote. Palmer’s Jim Colver did pass Delta’s Pam Goode late Tuesday night, but rose only about four percent to 28 percent of the vote.

By Wednesday morning, Rauscher's lead continued to hold at 50 to 28 with 100 percent in.

In Senate District E, as of midnight, Sen. Mike Shower appeared en route to victory over challenger Randall Kowalke with 86 percent of the vote and 19 of the 22 precincts reporting.

In the race for the Republican nod for governor, Dunleavy, a former Wasilla senator held 61 percent of the vote with 82 percent of the precincts reporting. Former Lt. Gov. Mead Treadwell was second at 32 percent. In the race for the Republican spot for lieutenant governor, Kevin Meyer (36 percent) held a lead over Palmer’s Edie Grunwald (26 percent).

In other races, Mark Neuman won the Republican bid for House District 8 with 1,769 votes over the 575 cast for Andy Murr. James Chesbro defeated Libertarian Mark Fish 294-146 for the Democratic nomination in House District 8.

The race between Patricia Faye-Brazel and Neal Lacy for the House District 10 went to Faye-Brazel with 2,289 votes to 203 for Lacy.

Unopposed candidates were: Republican Rep. Colleen Sullivan-Leonard in District 7, Democrat Su Kay in Senate Seat E, Republican Rep. David Eastman in District 10, Democrat Eileen Patterson in District 11, Republican Rep. Cathy Tilton in District 10 and Democrat Stephany Jeffers in District 10.
