WASILLA — The Wasilla Farmer’s Market is officially underway.
A variety of vendors selling an assortment of locally made goods from across the Mat-Su Valley opened their booths for the first day of the season Wednesday, June 1.
“We had a good day,” Wasilla Farmer’s Market organizer Eric Bush said.
Eric and Susan Bush run the market on behalf of the Wasilla Knik Historical Society. Susan said they’re working with over 30 vendors this year.
She said they have a good variety of new and returning vendors. She noted that a fair number of returning vendors have been with them since the previous location.
“We just basically have one big family,” Susan said.
Susan said the produce vendors will start showing up at the marker around the first of July.
The weather was exceptionally warm and sunny throughout the opening day of the market. Susan said they hope this trend continues every Wednesday.
“Any other day it can rain,” Susan laughed.
Fox Sauce LLC owner, Cacey Kruger said that she had a great opening day.
“People have been riding their bikes and bringing their dogs and shopping. It’s been really nice,” Kruger said.
This is Kruger’s second year as a vendor at the Wasilla Farmer’s Market. She said that plans to be there every Wednesday.
Like many others, Kruger sets up at several other markets and events throughout the summer. She said that her favorite part about being a vendor is the people.
“I like the fact that you get to know your neighbors,” Kruger said.
John’s Woodcrafts owner John Glenn has been a vendor at the Wasilla Farmer’s Market since it was held near Main Street. He said the current location near Wonderland Park is a great setting.
“It’s more open here. You get a lot more people going through,” Glenn said.
Glenn said that he started woodworking full time after he retired.
“I enjoy it. I’m not here to get rich,”
Wild Things Alaska owner Janelle Liermann is selling her wares at the Wasilla Farmer’s Market for the first time this summer. She said that she’s impressed with the variety of her fellow vendors and the quality of their goods.
“You see a lot of things at these markets that you will never see in a store. I think it’s cool that it’s supporting local Alaskans.” Liermann said.
Local shopper Kylie Briske said that she’s a “market fiend’ and attends markets with her friends and family all summer. She said that she prefers shopping at the Wasilla Farmer’s Market.
“This is a good market. They have good products and they deserve to have more people out here,” Briske said.
The Wasilla Farmers Market runs from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. every Wednesday near Wonderland Park. The market runs through the second week of September.
