PALMER — The Alaska Scottish Highland Games is returning to the Alaska State Fairgrounds Saturday, June 24 and Sunday, June 25.
The Highland Games will feature a variety of traditional Scottish games that involve feats of strength and skill. Athletes from all walks of life and experience levels come from across the state to compete in games such as axe throwing, the sheaf toss, the caber toss, and the Challenge Stone.
110 athletes have signed up for the 2023 Alaska Scottish Highland Games, according to the Alaskan Scottish Club Executive Director, Jeni McDaniel.

In addition to the usual variety of new and seasoned Alaskan athletes from across the state, this year's Highland Games will feature six professional athletes from the lower 48.
Several new athletic events will be featured this year including the Midnight Sun Spurtle Challenge, Eskimo Stick Pull, and Denali Stones which are based on Scottish Highland traditions with an Alaskan twist.
McDaniel noted that their junior athlete class has continued to grow and more families at getting involved each year.
"It's really wonderful to see the culture continue," McDaniel said.
A large variety of local vendors will be offering various goods and services throughout the two day event. There will be numerous games and activities for all ages.
The Highland Games also draws musical talent from across the country. This year's musical lineup includes acts such as Celtica Nova, the Harp Twins, and Joe Danielle.
McDaniel said that she's cherished the opportunity to put on this event with her dedicated crew and see it evolve over the years.
"I put my heart and soul into this event and it's something I truly cherish. I just really enjoying sharing the Scottish culture with everyone," McDaniel said.
