After over ten years in business, Pietisserie continues to showcase San Francisco native Jaynelle St. Jean’s talent for spinning the quintessential comfort food into an edgy, delicious spectacle. Case in point: her striking ultraviolet sweet potato pie available on Goldbelly, featuring locally sourced purple potatoes.

As for how she came to food, St. Jean’s roots are decidedly urban and interactive. During her 20s, she taught live cooking demos at farmers’ markets in New York City, and when she eventually moved back to San Francisco, St. Jean created an impromptu pie window at her mother’s house and started offering pie slices to passersby. Although she decided to close her brick-and-mortar shop during the pandemic, St. Jean is amping up nationwide shipping and will launch a bustling pop-up store during November and December.

From nailing a monochromatic Key lime pie with a spirulina-dyed crust, to presenting her works in custom-designed boxes with full-sized display windows, St. Jean’s passion for art, design and performance shows up in both the presentation of her pies and her care for our experience of them. Her experimental yet focused handiwork asks us to slow down and elevate the small things.

St. Jean shares three of her favorite pie recipes below.
