BISBEE − Bisbee High School’s girls basketball team allowed a 10-point third quarter lead to get away from them as the St. Augustine Wolves from Tucson roared back to beat the Pumas 43-42 in overtime on what was senior night Thursday, Jan. 30 at Bisbee High School.
Following the conclusion of the girls game and prior to the start of the boys game, BHS seniors Kitana Rogers, Isabella Solis, Mia Lopez and Yasline Hernandez were honored along with seniors from the boys basketball team and cheerleading squad.
Bisbee led 15-7 at the end of the first quarter and 22-18 at the half.
Two 3’s from junior Alyssa Lopez followed by baskets from junior Nicole Ceja and senior Mia Lopez helped the Pumas extend their lead to 32-22 heading into the fourth quarter.
St. Augustine turned the tables on Bisbee in the fourth stepping up its defensive pressure which led to turnovers and resulted in points for the Wolves who also sank two 3-pointers in what was a 17-7 run tying the game at 39-39 forcing it into overtime.
In OT Bisbee was 0 for 3 from the floor and 3 of 6 from the free-throw line. St. Augustine scored two key baskets which was enough to give the Wolves a one point win.
Lopez led the Pumas in scoring finishing with a game high 20 points. Isabella Solis followed with seven, Ceja six and Rogers contributed five.
Bisbee, 10-10 overall, 4-6 overall, 3-3 in region play, is currently ranked 30th in the 2A girls state basketball rankings. Much like the Bisbee boys basketball team the Bisbee girls need to win its final three games in order to have any shot of securing that 24th and final slot for the 2A play-in for state game.
Bisbee will be at St. Gregory in Tucson on Friday and back on Monday, Feb. 3 at San Miguel.
