The city of Wasilla election is Tuesday. Polls are open from 7 a.m. to 8 p.m. There are three candidates on the 2022 ballot, Nikki Velok, Ian Crafton and Alina Rubeo.
Below are responses to questions submitted to each candidate by the Frontiersman.
I have lived in the valley with my family for 45 years and in the City of Wasilla for over 30 years. I served on the Wasilla City Planning Commission for a year before being elected to the city council three years ago. I was appointed the Deputy Mayor of Wasilla in 2021.
I am a conscientious conservative. My election goals continue to be supporting the necessities of the city without wanton waste. I am also an ardent supporter of public safety, expanding infrastructure, and keeping taxes low.
During my term, the City of Wasilla became debt-free. We also paved 22 roads, kept taxes low and maintained a zero property tax.
I am licensed Realtor with the Ben Kinney Real Estate Team with Keller Williams. I have lived within the City of Wasilla for 18 months and lived in the Wasilla area for 20 years. I have many years of serving the public through different forms of volunteering, such as King’s Chapel, Mat-Su Special Santa, and Food Bank of Wasilla.
Some of my goals while in office are to keep Wasilla debt-free; pave every road and start repairing major damaged roads; reduce traffic congestion by assisting the state with an alternate corridor, and reviewing our municipal code so we can assist business growth and improve our underlying infrastructure to allow more businesses to come to Wasilla.
I’m a lifelong resident – 40 years and counting – and I have strong, diverse, and personal relationships throughout the Wasilla community. I am a Wasilla High School graduate and hold a Bachelors of Science at Oregon State University. I am dedicated to serving my city through continued education and devoted community involvement.
I have served on the Wasilla planning commission for the last three years and am currently on the city council since March. I’m a successful entrepreneur as owner and operator of Edge Fitness and Edge Preschool.
I support increased opportunity for small businesses and also shopping local. I love humanity and I respect all walks of life to the highest. I am a communicator who eagerly listens to understand, rather than to reply.
