3 seats, 1 proposition on Houston October ballot

HOUSTON — Three seats and one proposition will be on the ballot for voters’ consideration during the October regular city election.

Proposition No. 1 will ask voters to end a special 2 percent sales tax on fireworks set to expire Jan. 1, 2014. The special tax wouldn’t end if voters approve Prop. 1. Instead, under Ordinance 13-07, the 2 percent sales tax on fireworks would continue indefinitely with funds generated tagged for public safety.

Up for election Oct. 1 are Seats E, F and G on Houston City Council, which are held by Jim Johansen, Paul Stout and Kathleen Barney respectively. The filing period is July 15-26 for the three-year terms, which expire in October 2016.

At a special meeting on the first Monday following certification of the election, the council elects two of its members to serve one-year terms as mayor and deputy mayor.

To file for the election, people can download the candidate packet online or obtain a copy at the clerk’s office at Houston City Hall. People have until Sept. 1 to register to vote in this year’s Oct. 1 election.
