Retiring teacher, coach urges Colony grads to ‘find their 68’

ANCHORAGE — Ceil Dunleavy, Sylvia Tuisaula and Brandon Nicholson are state champions.
Over the hot and sunny weekend, Dunleavy and Tuisaula claimed wins in the high jump and shot put, respectively, for the Wasilla Warriors at the ASAA/First National Bank State Track and Field Championships at Dimond High School.
This was Dunleavy’s second state championship after winning the high jump last year, as a freshman, with a mark of 5-2.
“The whole goal for this year was to get 5-4, go up two inches every year,” Dunleavy told Frontiersman staff Friday evening.
Although Dunleavy was the returning champ, Colony junior Chase Stevens beat her in the Region III championship last weekend, and was expecting to be more of a contender at state.
But Stevens knew Dunleavy would be tough to beat — after all, the Warrior was a state champion, and she took fourth in the first meet of the season, the Big C Relays, while Stevens placed 14th.
“I think about Ceil a lot,” Stevens said. “I don’t know how to flick my body up and get my legs over like she does.”
This year, Stevens placed fourth in the high jump, third in the long jump, third in the 100-meter hurdles, and she placed in the triple jump.
Her goals for next season are to “place higher in everything,” she said, and hopefully break the state high jump record of 5-6 and the long jump record of 17-2. Thus far, her personal bests are 5-4 and 17 feet, respectively.
Tuisuala, like Stevens, was a region champ this year, too — but unlike Stevens, she also won state in her event.
Going into the meet, Tuisaula said, she figured her chances of throwing farthest in the state were “iffy.” Earlier this season, Richelle Walker of Kodiak hit 37 feet, and that “kind of scared me,” Tuisuala said.
“She didn’t pull it out (at regions) but I was still kind of iffy (about winning) so I didn’t want to get too excited yet,” she said, of her feelings before the state meet.
But she wasn’t too worried about the Anchorage throwers.
“It seems like it’s always been the Valley and Peninsula teams head-on,” Tuisaula said.
And when she threw a 36-1.5 to Walker’s 33-08.75, she was “really happy.”
But mostly about beating her personal best of 35-10.5.
“I didn’t feel like the win was that big a deal, I just want to keep improving each meet,” she said.
And how is she going to do that for next year, her last as a high school athlete? By refining her technique, she said, not worrying about strength.
“Even a small girl can throw like 40 feet — it’s about technique,” Tuisuala said.
Nicholson said he too has the strength aspect of his events down, but wants to improve his speed and launch in the long and triple jumps.
The athlete’s strategy, however, is to work one-on-one with former Colony champion David Registe, who currently holds the school record in the long jump and capped his career with UAA in 2011 as one of the most decorated track and field athletes in program history.
Nicholson said Registe saw him perform at Big C Relays and tried to offer tips “right then and there.”
“He saw my potential,” Nicholson said.
As a sophomore, Nicholson has two more years to hone his skills, and already he’s become more serious about the competition, he says. Going to state in the triple jump last year, he said, kind of changed his mindset.
“I realized when I went to state that I could do something with it,” Nicholson said.
And he did. This year he jumped 43-09.25 at state — several inches off his personal record of 44-6.75 (which he earned at regions this year), but 3 feet farther than his 2014 P.R.
In addition to his triple jump win, Nicholson placed fourth in the long jump with a P.R. of 20-6.75 and third in the high jump with a mark of 6-3, an inch shy of his personal best.
He also qualified in the 400-meter run, but had only run it at regions for points, and did not intend to run it at state, he said, because he “didn’t want to be sluggish” in his approach for the long jump (which occurs at about the same time as the race).
Another top finisher at state was Colony’s Kristina Tennesen, who as a sophomore this year took second in the discus with a throw of 113 feet. Her throw in the shot put was more than 3 feet shorter than her personal best of 32-7.5 (earned this season), but she brushed it off and was able to “just stay calm and launch it out there” for the discus competition Saturday.
As a sophomore, Tennesen has two more years to beat the school record of 135 feet in the discus, a goal of hers.
Palmer sophomores Ruby Woodings and Rya Berrigan also put their best feet forward Saturday, working with senior teammates Naomi Graham and Sami Contraras to place third in the 3,200-meter relay behind second-place team Colony. The Moose took third in the region race, so they were expecting to place somewhere between fourth and sixth against Anchorage and Fairbanks teams.
“It’s hard to run ’cause it’s so fast but you have to strategize,” Berrigan said.
But they each beat their individual P.R.s by about 2 seconds on Saturday, for a total 10-second P.R. in the relay, Graham said.
“These two pushed us,” Graham said, of her sophomore teammates.
And so did the Colony relay team, the Palmer girls said.
“They’re not only good competition, they’re really sweet girls,” Contraras said, of Coleen Geraghty, Elisabeth Bowker, Cathelyne Powers and Jordyn Block.
