3 Valley schools closed through Friday due to COVID-19

Three Mat-Su schools will be closed through the end of the week due to additional COVID-19 positive cases, according to the latest update provided by the Mat-Su Borough School District.

Wasilla Middle joins Houston Jr./Sr. High and Teeland Middle on that list. The status of those schools will be reevaluated Sunday. Meadow Lakes Elementary was also closed Wednesday due to a staffing shortage, according to the district.

Eight additional COVID-19 cases were reported in the district Tuesday and Wednesday. On Tuesday, three of those were at Wasilla Middle. Single cases were also reported at Redington Jr/Sr. High and Palmer Junior Middle. Single cases at Academy Charter, Goosebay Elementary and Wasilla High were reported Wednesday.

There have been 115 total cases in the district.

The entire district moved into the medium risk level Wednesday, which is defined by the district as low to moderate level of community transmission.

A total of 413 new COVID-19 cases were reported in the state Tuesday. There are 10,205 cases in Alaska that are considered active.

The Mat-Su Borough set a single-day high with 83 new cases reported on Wednesday. The Mat-Su’s case rate stands at 52.75, with 786 total cases reported in the last 14 days. That is 46 percent of the cumulative total of 1,689 cases reported in the borough. There is a seven-day positivity rate is 12.85 percent in the Valley.
