WASILLA — A group of visitors from Washington had their hands full with Alaska’s defending state champions.
The Granite Falls Tigers of Granite Falls, Washington, started their stay in the 49th state with a 79-14 loss to Wasilla, the 2017 4A girls’ champs, Thursday evening during the first day of the Doc Larson Roundball Classic at Wasilla High School.
Wasilla (1-1) jumped to a 22-6 lead in the game, and didn’t allow more than six points in any quarter. Granite Falls finished with just three points in the second half. Wasilla led 48-11 at the break.
Senior Azlynn Brandenburg was one of four Warriors to finish in double digits in scoring, leading the way with 18 points. She added six rebounds, five assists and four steals. Cheyenne Green added 16 points and Diondra Lawhead chipped in 14 on 7 of 10 shooting. Maclaren Obremski shot 50 percent from the field and added 13.
Desirae Titus led the Warriors with 10 rebounds.
Wasilla is one of four teams in the Doc Larson round-robin girls’ bracket. In other action, last year’s 4A runner-up Dimond beat Stephenson High of Stone Hill, Georgia, 75-40.
A pair of Valley teams scored wins during the first day in the eight-team boys bracket.
Host Wasilla used a big start to grab a win over Thunder Mountain. The Warriors scored 30 first-quarter points in the 68-44 victory over the Falcons. Wasilla shot 75 percent from the floor in the first quarter, and 52 percent in the game.
Reilly Devine led Wasilla with 15 points and nine rebounds. Daniel Headdings and Levi Houck added 12 each, and Aeron Milliron finished with 11.
Colony used a 17-4 second-quarter run to earn a 66-46 victory over East Anchorage earlier in the day Thursday.
Will Freeman led the Knights with 17 points. Sullivan Menard scored 16. Parker Kizer added 10 and a team-high eight rebounds.
In other action, Stephenson (Georgia) beat barrow 76-48 and Enumclaw (Washington) edged Dimond 39-36.
Both Valley teams will play in the tournament semifinals Friday. Colony faces Enumclaw at 5 p.m. Wasilla meets Stephenson at 8:20 p.m.
On the other side of the bracket, Dimond plays Cook Inlet Conference rival East at noon and Barrow sees Thunder Mountain at 3:20 p.m.
In the girls tourney, Dimond plays Granite Falls at 1:40 p.m. and Wasilla hosts Stephenson at 6:40 p.m.
