4A tourney brackets set; Colony girls claim a top seed, Wasilla boys draw top seed

MAT-SU — The brackets for the ASAA 4A State Basketball Championships are now set, and of the four Mat-Su teams in the tourney field, one will be the top seed and another will face a top seed.

Fresh off cutting down the nets following a 50-46 win over Wasilla in the Northern Lights Conference final, the Colony Knights are the top team on the girls' bracket. The defending state champions first step on the road to competing for a second straight title is a first-round match with NLC foe Kodiak, March 19 at 5:15 p.m. at the Sullivan Arena in Anchorage.

The Wasilla Warriors, who edged Soldotna to win the NLC boys' championship on Saturday in Kodiak, will have the dubious distinction of facing the top team on the boys' bracket, West Anchorage, in the first round. Wasilla meets West, the Cook Inlet Conference champ, at 8:45 p.m. on March 19.

In other first-round games, the seventh-seeded Colony boys meet second-seeded Dimond at 1:15 p.m. while the fifth-seeded Wasilla girls face the fourth-seeded Dimond Lynx at 3:30 p.m. Both games are also on March 19.
