WASILLA — The Valley’s queen of mushing and king of distance running were among a half-dozen Mat-Su runners to complete the prestigious Boston Marathon Monday.
Jonrowe, a two-time Iditarod Sled Dog Race runner-up who has finished the “Last Great Race” 31 times in her mushing carereer, finished the country’s most noted marathon in 5 hours, 6 minutes and 32 seconds Monday. Jonrowe, 62, is a veteran in running, with 11 Mount Marathon races to her credit, by Monday marked the first time in the Boston Marathon for the Willow woman.
Another Willow runner, David Johnston, has become a Valley fixture in the Boston Marathon since first competing in the race in 2006. Monday, Johnston, 46, completed the race in 3:35:53. Johnston, who has become widely known in the world of ultramarathons, finished his first Boston Marathon in 2006, with a time of 3:39:32.
John Naylor of Wasilla is also a Boston Marathon veteran. Nayor, 39, posted a time of 3:31.02 in the 2016 race.
Gabriella Sonnenberg was the fastest among the four Valley women in the race. The 22-year-old Wasilla runner finished the race in 3:36:44. Palmer’s Michelle Richards, 49, completed the course in 3:44:23. Wasilla’s Ursula Fogarty, 44, finished in 4:59:25.
Sonnenberg notched the eighth fastest finish among Alaska women in the race. Richards was 10th fastest among women from Alaska competing.
