The 7 Summits Club, an international climbing club leading expeditions all around the world, opened a seasonal office in Talkeetna this year to award independent climbers that successfully summited Denali. Mountaineers that stood on top of the highest point in North America were awarded a certificate, received a medal of completion and other gifts for achieving the feat.
This is the first season that 7 Summits Club has had their own space in Talkeetna. They plan to expand in the upcoming years to include a climbing center that will be utilized by climbers and enjoyed by tourists, according to Manager Dmytro Bondar. 7 Summits Club would like to highlight the importance and significance of the climbing history in Talkeetna.
Only 30% of climbers successfully summited Denali this year due to adverse weather conditions, Bondar said. Those that visited the 7 Summits Club Office shared their stories from the mountain and provided important information to be used in a large database that the club maintains on mountains across the world. Bondar said that the climbers that were recognized for their hard work were appreciative and happy to return home with more than just a memory.
