Retiring teacher, coach urges Colony grads to ‘find their 68’

MAT-SU — Each fall, the Mat-Su Schools Foundation sends out a call for teachers to submit grant proposals for innovative ideas for teaching and learning. The foundation offers $500 grants, and asks that proposals impact as many students as possible and that they are sustainable over time.
The foundation received 10 proposals for $500 teacher grants, and the following seven proposals were accepted:
• Carol Boatman, Snowshoe Elementary: Resources for parent workshops using the Parenting the Love and Logic Way.
• Donna Ishmael, Pioneer Peak Elementary: Books and other materials for literacy and math family nights.
• Marcy Farris, Finger Lake Elementary: Lego machines for science and engineering experiential learning projects.
• Joel Moorman, Glacier View: Soil, soil testing and equipment for Wolverine Garden, where students grow vegetables and learn about science, health and wellness.
• Michele Menzia, Midnight Sun Charter School: Vermicomposting worms develop soil in classrooms.
• Brenna Reintsma and Elizabeth Palmer, Big Lake Elementary Collaborative Occupational Therapy for Teachers: Teacher training on improving students’ fine motor, visual and sensory motor skills for reading, writing, listening and speaking.
• Connie Bamburg, Machetanz Elementary: Dictionary Divers literacy program; donation of materials from Goose Bay Elementary library.
Deadline for the foundation’s $1,000 Gorilla Fireworks Grant offered to Houston school teachers has been extended to Nov. 5.
