PALMER— A total of 70 students participated in the 2024 Palmer Junior Middle School All School Spelling Bee.

PJMS teacher Linda Jo Klapperich said that she was happy with the overall participation and how everything unfolded.

"I think it went amazing," Klapperich said. “Great numbers again this year."

6th, 7th, and 8th graders participated in the annual schoolwide Spelling Bee with parents, staff and community members cheering them on. Klapperich said it’s a fun and enriching tradition.

“I get excited about seeing these kids participating in this event,” Klapperich said. “It’s grown to be a fun annual event year. It’s just so important.”

Klapperich has facilitated the PJMS Spelling Bee for two decades. She also coordinates other school events such as the talent show. She expressed how important it is for students to get involved in school events..

“These activities are tremendous self esteem builders,” Klapperich said.

All Spelling Bee participants received certificates and the top three finishers received trophies for their efforts. Klapperich marveled at the students’ dedication.

“It takes a lot of courage for these students to come up in front of everybody,” Klapperich said.

8th grade student Charlotte Marciales was this year’s overall winner. Klapperich said Marciales will take an online test to qualify for the 2024 Alaskas State Spelling Bee which will be held March 21 at the Discovery Theatre in Anchorage.

Klapperich was chosen as the pronouncer for the State Spelling Bee. She said that she’s thrilled to have the opportunity.

“That’s exciting but I have to do a lot of studying of words,” Klapperich said with a laugh.
