9 Valley grapplers advance to state wrestling finals

ANCHORAGE — A combined Valley grapplers advanced to the finals in three different classes during the first day of the ASAA/First National Bank State Wrestling Championships Friday evening at Bartlett High School in Anchorage.

Defending 4A state champion Colony leads the Valley with four wrestlers in the finals. Levi Hopkins (120 pounds), Caleb Hopkins (138), Robert Haan (170) and Dawson Nash (182) each won their semifinal matches to move forward. Sophomore Micah Mathis, a defending state champion, leads a group of three Wasilla wrestlers in the finals. Berit Sturgeon (132) and Samuel Wolff (138) also moved into the final round.

Houston has representatives in the finals in two different classes. Ezra Lincecum will wrestle for a 123A title at 220 pounds. Teeana Nicholai will battle for the title at 132 in the girls’ class.

South Anchorage leads the 4A team standings after the first day with 189.5 points. Lathrop (154.5), Colony (144) and Wasilla (101.5) fand Chugiak (71) followed to round out the top 5. Palmer was eighth with 63.5 points after the first day.

Houston was seventh in the 123A team standings with 60 points.

Wrestling continues Saturday at 9 a.m. at Bartlett and Chugiak high schools. The 4A consolation second and third rounds, and consolation semifinals are from 9 a.m. to noon at Chugiak. The 123A consolation second and third rounds, and consolation, semifinals, and Saturday’s girls round are from 9 a.m. to noon at Chugiak.

The remainder of the rounds are at Bartlett. The consolation championships (which includes the third-place and fifth-place matches for the 123A, 4A and girls classes are from 2:30-4:45 p.m. at Bartlett. The championship introductions for all three classes is scheduled for Saturday at 5 p.m. at Bartlett, and the finals are slated to begin at 5:30 p.m.
