It was a delightful day at Finger Lake this Sunday for the annual Mat-Su Kids Ice Fishing Derby. Hundreds of kids ice fished to compete for the largest (by age class) and number of fish caught.
There was a high level of energy by both the young fishers and their parents. Of special interest was the “return hole” where, after a fish had been measured, at the request of the younger fishermen, fish could be returned to the lake. Numerous kids opted to return their fish. There also was high praise for the event as it raised funds for the Make-A-Wish Foundation.
The derby was very well organized and Jehniffer and Butch Ehmann of Ehmann Outdoors are to be commended for a great job. Frontiersman readers should also know that Jehniffer and Butch Ehmann were the sponsors of a proposal to the Board of Fisheries for “Kids Fishing Days” for coho and king salmon at the Ekultna Tailrace. T
hese new regulations were among the few proposals unanimously approved by the Board of Fish.
